Business Security Without the Monthly Camera Fees: A San Diego Guide to UniFi Protect + Access

Business Security Without the Monthly Camera Fees: A San Diego Guide to UniFi Protect + Access

Cameras are easy to buy. Walk into any big-box store or scroll any vendor’s site and you can have a slick camera system quoted in minutes. The catch almost always shows up on the second page of the proposal: the monthly subscription.

A lot of popular business camera and door-access systems charge a recurring fee per camera and per door — every month, forever, scaling up as you add hardware. Cancel the subscription and you can lose recording, remote viewing, or features you already paid for the hardware to have. For a growing business, that bill quietly becomes one of those line items nobody remembers signing up for.

There’s a better-architected way to do this, and it’s what we install for San Diego businesses: UniFi.

The hidden cost of “cloud” camera systems

Subscription camera platforms are convenient, but the economics work against you over time:

  • The fee is per device, per month — 12 cameras and 4 doors can mean a meaningful recurring bill that grows every time you expand.
  • It never ends. You’re effectively renting access to footage from hardware you already own.
  • You’re locked in. Stop paying and key features can go dark.

If you’re going to own the cameras, it’s worth asking why you should pay a toll to watch them.

The UniFi approach

UniFi treats physical security as part of your network, not a separate cloud service you rent:

UniFi Protect (cameras). Footage records locally to a UniFi console or NVR you own — there’s no per-camera cloud license. You still get clean mobile and browser viewing from anywhere, motion and smart detections, and as much retention as your storage allows.

UniFi Access (doors). Card, fob, and mobile-phone unlock, scheduled access, and a full entry log — managed in the same app as your cameras, with no per-door cloud subscription.

UniFi sensors. Leak, temperature, and motion sensors that tie into the same system, so a burst pipe in the server closet or an after-hours door event actually reaches you.

It’s one platform, one app, and one team to call — and it lives on the same UniFi network we already design and monitor for clients.

Planning a system that actually works

The hardware is the easy part. A system that’s genuinely useful comes down to design. When we plan a deployment, we work through:

  • Coverage: every entrance and exit, the point of sale, stockrooms and inventory, server/IT areas, and parking or loading zones.
  • The right camera for each spot: wide-angle for open areas, higher-resolution or AI cameras where you need to read a face or a plate, PTZ where one camera covers a lot of ground.
  • Retention and storage: how many days of footage you want to keep, sized correctly so you’re not surprised when older clips roll off.
  • Doors and access: which entries should be controlled, who gets access when, and what happens during a power or internet outage.
  • The network underneath: proper PoE switching, cabling, and remote access — the part most “just buy cameras” jobs skip, and the reason cheap installs fail.

Get the design right and the system is something you’ll actually rely on. Get it wrong and it’s expensive wall decoration.

Why local and certified matters

Anyone can order UniFi gear online. The difference is the design, the install quality, and who answers when something needs attention. Key MSP is a Ubiquiti Certified Partner, based right here in San Diego. We design and install cleanly, we’ll adopt and tidy up an existing UniFi deployment, and we can manage and monitor the whole thing 24/7 — all with flat monthly pricing and $0 onboarding.

If you found us through Ubiquiti’s installer directory, that’s us — see the UniFi installation page for what we cover. And because it all rides on your network, it pairs naturally with our managed network service.

Thinking about cameras, door access, or replacing a system that’s nickel-and-diming you? Let’s design something you own outright.
